What is GI Coil? (GI Coil Full Form and Meaning)
GI Coil full form is Galvanized Iron Coil. It is a cold-rolled steel coil coated with a uniform layer of zinc through a continuous hot-dip galvanizing process — the steel strip is passed through a bath of molten zinc at approximately 450°C. The zinc bonds metallurgically to the steel surface, creating a barrier that prevents oxidation. Even if the surface is scratched, the surrounding zinc oxidises first (sacrificial protection), protecting the base steel underneath. GP Coil full form is Galvanized Plain Coil. In the Indian market, GI Coil and GP Coil refer to the same product — both are zinc-coated flat-rolled steel coils manufactured as per IS 277. Fabricators and traders use GI; pipe manufacturers and roofing contractors use GP.
GI Coil Weight Calculator
To calculate GI coil weight per metre: Weight (kg/m) = Thickness (mm) × Width (mm) × 0.00000785. Example: 0.5mm thick × 1000mm wide = 0.5 × 1000 × 0.00000785 = 3.925 kg per metre. A 1000-metre coil of this size weighs approximately 3,925 kg (3.9MT). Note: Zinc coating adds approximately 0.8–2.2 kg per tonne to the total weight depending on coating grade.
| Thickness | Width 1000mm | Width 1200mm | Width 1250mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.30mm | 2.36 kg/m | 2.83 kg/m | 2.95 kg/m |
| 0.40mm | 3.14 kg/m | 3.77 kg/m | 3.93 kg/m |
| 0.50mm | 3.93 kg/m | 4.71 kg/m | 4.91 kg/m |
| 0.60mm | 4.71 kg/m | 5.65 kg/m | 5.89 kg/m |
| 0.80mm | 6.28 kg/m | 7.54 kg/m | 7.85 kg/m |
| 1.00mm | 7.85 kg/m | 9.42 kg/m | 9.81 kg/m |

Difference Between GI Coil and CR Coil
GI Coil (Galvanized Iron) is a CR coil with a zinc coating applied via hot-dip galvanizing. The base material is the same — cold-rolled steel — but GI carries a zinc layer (Z120/Z180/Z275) for corrosion protection. CR Coil (Cold Rolled) has no coating — it is bare steel with a smooth, bright surface. Choose GI for outdoor, humid, or corrosive environments where rust resistance is required. Choose CR for indoor precision parts, deep drawing applications, and components that will receive their own surface treatment (paint, powder coat, plating) post-fabrication. GI costs 8–12% more than equivalent CR due to the zinc coating.
Get Material Grade AdviceGI Coil Price in India and Mumbai
GI Coil price in Mumbai depends on four factors: thickness (thinner gauges carry a premium), coating grade (Z275 is priced ₹3–6/kg higher than Z120), brand (JSW GI Coil and TATA Galvano carry a ₹2–4/kg premium over secondary grade), and quantity (full coil lots are priced lower than slit or cut-length). As of May 2026, the approximate GI coil price is ₹55–₹78 per kg for IS 277 grade in Mumbai. GI Coil Price Today and Market Trends
GI coil prices fluctuate based on global zinc LME rates, HR coil base prices, and domestic steel demand. Major manufacturers like JSW Steel (JSW GI Coil), Tata Steel (TATA Galvano), and SAIL revise galvanized coil prices monthly. Current market trends show GI coil prices closely tracking zinc LME movements — a 10% rise in zinc prices adds approximately ₹1.5–2/kg to GI coil cost. GI Coil HSN Code
The HSN code for GI Coil (Galvanized Steel Coil) is 72104900 — flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel, of a width of 600mm or more, plated or coated with zinc, not corrugated. GST rate: 18%. For PPGI (Pre-Painted GI Coil), HSN code is 72106100.
