What is GI Coil? (GI Coil Full Form and Meaning)
GI Coil full form is Galvanized Iron Coil. It is a cold-rolled coil coated with a uniform layer of zinc through a continuous hot-dip galvanizing process the sheet coil strip is passed through a bath of molten zinc at approximately 450°C. The zinc bonds metallurgically to the steel surface, creating a barrier that prevents oxidation. Even if the surface is scratched, the surrounding zinc oxidises first (sacrificial protection), protecting the base steel underneath. GP Coil full form is Galvanized Plain Coil. In the Indian market, GI Coil and GP Coil refer to the same product both are zinc-coated flat-rolled steel coils manufactured as per Quality. Fabricators and traders use GI; pipe manufacturers and roofing contractors use GP.

Difference Between GI Coil and CR Coil
GI Coil (Galvanized Iron) is a CR coil with a zinc coating applied via hot-dip galvanizing. The base material is the same cold-rolled sheets but GI carries a zinc layer (Z120/Z180/Z275) for corrosion protection. CR Coil (Cold Rolled) has no coating it is bare steel with a smooth, bright surface. Choose GI for outdoor, humid, or corrosive environments where rust resistance is required. Choose CR for indoor precision parts, deep drawing applications, and components that will receive their own surface treatment (paint, powder coat, plating) post-fabrication. GI costs 8 to 12% more than equivalent CR due to the zinc coating.
HSN Code of Galvanized Iron Coil
The HSN code for GI Coil (Galvanized Steel Coil) is 72104900 flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel, of a width of 600mm or more, plated or coated with zinc, not corrugated. GST rate: 18%. For PPGI (Pre-Painted GI Coil), HSN code is 72106100.
