MS Sheet vs HR Sheet vs MS Plate – Understanding the Terms

In the Mumbai steel market, MS sheet, HR sheet, and mild steel sheet are often used to describe the same product: a hot-rolled IS 2062 flat-rolled steel in thicknesses from 1.6mm to 6mm. The distinction typically used by stockists and buyers is thickness-based: material up to 5–6mm is called MS sheet or HR sheet; material from 6mm and above is referred to as MS plate or HR plate. This is a trade convention, not a standards definition – IS 2062 covers both. CR sheet (cold-rolled) is a separate product manufactured by cold-reducing hot-rolled coil to tighter thickness tolerances with a clean, scale-free surface – buyers who need tight dimensional control and smooth finish for powder coating or visible fabrication should specify CR sheet (IS 513) rather than MS sheet. MS chequered plate is a separate product under IS 3502 with a raised anti-slip surface pattern. For procurement teams: always specify IS 2062 grade (E250A or E350), thickness in mm, standard 8x4 ft or custom cut size, and whether MTC is required. This eliminates ambiguity in supply chain ordering and ensures you receive the certified grade you need.
